Rilla and the Ring of a Trillion Friends
Long ago, a tiny piece of ice named Rilla was part of a small icy moon circling Saturn — until the day her whole world gently came apart, and she discovered something far more wondrous waiting for her.
A tiny moon of ice
Long, long ago, high above golden, striped Saturn, a little moon made of ice sparkled as it circled the giant planet. Tucked safely inside it was a tiny fleck of ice named Rilla, content and whole, watching the stars go by.
Coming apart, gently
One day, ever so slowly, the little moon began to come apart — not with a crash, but gently, like a puzzle drifting open piece by piece. Rilla tumbled free into open space, a tiny grain of ice among countless others, some as small as sand and some as large as a house.
Surrounded by new friends
At first Rilla wondered if she was all alone out there. But as she drifted, she looked around — and around, and around — and saw she was surrounded. Trillions of other icy pieces floated near her, leftover bits of moons and comets that had come apart long before, each one twinkling quietly in the sunlight.
Falling into one ring
Little by little, Rilla and all her new icy neighbors settled into a wide, flat path circling Saturn together. Each piece kept its own gentle orbit, but moving all together, they formed one great, shimmering band that stretched all the way around the enormous planet.
One ring, trillions of travelers
Far away on Earth, children looked up through their telescopes and saw one smooth, glowing ring circling Saturn. They never guessed it was really trillions of icy travelers like Rilla, each one its own tiny world, twinkling together in a slow, silent swarm around the planet they all called home.
