How can something look like a solid ring from so far away?
ach ring is actually made up of trillions of separate icy pieces, some as small as a grain of sand and some as large as a house, all independently orbiting Saturn together within a wide, flat band. Most scientists think the rings formed from the shattered remains of icy moons, comets, or asteroids that broke apart long ago, before ever fully forming into a single moon. From far away on Earth, all those countless icy pieces blur together into what looks like one smooth, glowing ring, even though up close each ring is really an enormous, slow-motion swarm of orbiting ice.
