Mangrove trees grow roots that arch up out of the mud like a tangle of legs, letting them stand right in the salty sea.

Why does a mangrove tree need legs made of roots?
he muddy shoreline where mangroves grow holds very little air underground, so these curved roots rise above the mud to breathe. The tangled roots also work like a net, catching sand and calming waves so the shore doesn't wash away. Fish, crabs, and baby sea creatures hide safely in the underwater maze the roots create.
