Nori and Her Three Hearts
Deep in a sunny reef, a small octopus named Nori dreams of swimming as fast as the fish around her — until a wise old turtle shows her the secret beating inside her own eight arms.
A wish to swim fast
Nori tucked herself between two rocks and watched a silver school of fish zip past like darts of light. Whoosh — gone in a blink! She sighed, her eight arms curling with longing. 'I wonder what it feels like to swim that fast,' she whispered to a passing seahorse.
A tired burst of speed
That afternoon, Nori took a deep breath and squeezed water through her body, jetting forward in one quick burst. Zoom! For one glorious moment, she felt like a comet streaking through the blue. But almost as fast as she started, her arms grew heavy, and she drifted to the sand, puffing. 'Why am I so tired already?' she wondered.
A wise turtle's secret
Old Pemba the sea turtle, who had swum the reef for sixty years, chuckled kindly. 'Did you know you have three hearts, little one?' she asked. 'Two of them work together, pushing your blood through your gills to gather fresh ocean air. But your third heart — the big one — pauses to rest each time you jet through the water. That's why swimming tuckers you out so quickly!'
A touch of ocean blue
Nori looked down at herself in wonder. 'Three hearts? I never even knew!' Just then, a beam of sunlight pierced the water and lit up her arm like a lantern, and there, beneath her skin, she could see the faintest glow of blue. 'Your blood is blue because of something called copper,' Pemba explained. 'Most creatures use iron and turn red, but you carry a little piece of ocean-blue magic inside you instead.'
Her own way to explore
Nori thought about the fast fish, and then about her own eight clever arms. She didn't need to zoom to be amazing! She crawled along the seafloor instead, tasting colors with her suckers, tucking into crannies no fast fish could ever fit, and waving hello to a shy sea slug others always swam right past. 'I don't have to be the fastest,' she said happily. 'I just have to be me — three hearts and all.'
