Wild Wonder story

Pip's Pocket Journey

Smaller than a jellybean, blind, and utterly determined, a newborn kangaroo named Pip must make the biggest journey of her life — straight up into her mother's warm, waiting pouch.

A tiny pink newborn kangaroo joey, no bigger than a jellybean, rests in the grass beside its mother's tail.

A tiny beginning

Under a wide gum tree, something so small it could fit inside a teaspoon had just been born. Her name would one day be Pip, though right now she had no fur and no open eyes — just a tiny, hopeful heartbeat, smaller than a jellybean.

Climbing by instinct

Pip couldn't see the world yet, but she didn't need to. Deep in her tiny bones, she knew exactly which way was up, and paw over paw she climbed through her mother Ruby's soft fur, following a warm trail only her nose could find.

A pocket just for her

At last, Pip found it — a warm, round pocket, snug as a hug. Inside waited something even better: milk made just for her, which quietly grew richer and thicker each week, exactly when tiny Pip needed it most.

First hop outside

Months later, a fuzzy-eared, bright-eyed Pip poked her head into the sunshine for the very first time. Grass! Sky! A hopping cousin nearby! She took one wobbly hop onto the warm ground and nibbled her very first blade of sweet green grass.

Safe again in a heartbeat

A shadow passed overhead, and Pip's heart gave a little jump. She didn't think twice — in one happy leap, she dove headfirst back into Ruby's pouch, safe and warm. 'Whenever you need me, this pocket is yours,' Ruby said softly, and Pip drifted off to sleep, tail poking out the top.
