Wild Wonder story

Lumi's Cool Little Lantern

When dusk settles over the meadow, a small firefly named Lumi feels something new and glowing wake up inside her. Follow her as she learns to read the secret blinking language of the fireflies.

A small firefly named Lumi perches on a blade of grass at dusk, looking down in surprise at her own glowing tail as the sky turns purple.

Dusk in the meadow

As the sun slipped behind the hills, Lumi the firefly felt a strange, warm tickle deep in her tail. She looked down — and gasped. Her very own lantern was waking up, glowing soft and gold against the darkening grass. 'Oh!' she whispered. 'I'm glowing!'

A light with no heat

Lumi reached back and touched her glowing tail with one careful leg. She braced herself for warmth — but felt nothing at all. Her light was cool, cool as the evening dew! 'A lantern with no heat,' she marveled. 'How wonderful and strange.' Deep inside her tail, tiny helpers were mixing together to turn her energy into pure, gentle light instead of warmth — though Lumi only knew it felt like magic.

Practicing her blinks

Lumi lifted off into the cooling air and tried her lantern out. Blink... blink-blink... blink. She tried again, playing with the rhythm until it felt just right — short, short, long, like a tiny song only she could sing. 'That's it,' she said happily. 'That's my very own pattern.'

A secret hello

Lumi rose above the tall grass and sent her pattern out into the wide summer night. Blink... blink-blink... blink. It was her own secret hello, written in light instead of words. She wondered if anyone out there in the dark would understand it.

Found by her light

Then, one by one, tiny lights answered back from the meadow — blink... blink-blink... blink — the very same pattern as her own! Lumi's heart glowed brighter than her lantern as other fireflies rose up to meet her. Together they danced in soft golden circles under the stars, each one glowing its own special hello, all speaking the same warm language of light.
