Wild Wonder story

Zizi's Colors of Feeling

Zizi the chameleon can turn a whole new color in seconds, but not to disappear. Follow her through one sunny day to discover what her colors are really trying to say.

A small green chameleon rests curled on a leafy rainforest branch in soft morning light, blending calmly with the surrounding leaves.

A calm morning

High on a rainforest branch, a young chameleon named Zizi soaked up the morning sun. Her skin was a soft, sleepy green, blending in with the leaves all around her. She felt safe, and calm, and perfectly happy right where she was.

A curious visitor

A hummingbird named Ruby zipped past and hovered close, her wings humming like a tiny drum. "Zizi, why do you keep turning the same color as the leaves? Are you hiding from me?" she asked. Zizi blinked her big round eyes and smiled. "Not hiding," she said. "Just feeling calm. Watch what happens when I feel something else."

A burst of sunshine colors

Just then, Zizi spotted her best friend, a bold little chameleon named Kofi, climbing up the very same branch. Her heart gave a happy little skip. In just a few seconds, her green skin melted away into bright, sunny orange, then a cheerful yellow, glowing like a tiny lantern. "Whoa!" Ruby gasped. "You're the color of a sunrise!"

A living kaleidoscope

"That's my happy color," Zizi laughed. "Deep in my skin, I have tiny, tiny crystals, smaller than specks of sand. When I feel excited, they spread apart and catch the light in a whole new way, almost like a living kaleidoscope." Kofi nodded, his own skin flickering a warm gold. "And when you feel quiet and safe," he added, "the crystals snuggle close together again, and the colors turn soft and calm."

Understanding each other

Ruby fluttered with delight. "So your colors are like a feelings map!" she said. "Can I guess them?" From then on, every time Ruby visited, she'd watch Zizi's skin and guess her mood: bright and bold for excited, soft green for calm and cozy. As the sun dipped low, Zizi's colors settled back into a peaceful, sleepy green, and all three friends rested together, happy simply to understand one another a little better.
