Why would an animal build a whole dam just for itself?
eavers use their strong, constantly growing front teeth to cut branches, then pile them together with mud and stones, stacking the mixture until the flowing water behind it backs up into a calm pond. That pond keeps the entrance to their cozy, dome-shaped lodge safely underwater, hidden from hungry foxes and wolves that can't swim in to reach it. Beavers can even hear the sound of running water and will instinctively add more material to a dam wherever they hear a leak, keeping the pond steady all year round.
